“They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They caught me in New York–but I escaped.
I am Number Six.
They want to finish what they started.
But they’ll have to fight us first.”
People may know the rather mysterious Pittacius Lore as the author of the bestselling novel ‘I am Number Four’, which was made into a blockbuster film by DreamWorks. For those not in the loop, ‘The Rise of Nine’ is the third novel in The Lorien Legacies, a series that portrays the ongoing war between two alien races, the Mogadorians (the antagonists) and the Loriens (the protagonists), on planet Earth.
When the nine Loriens first arrived on Earth, a powerful charm prevented them from being hunted to extinction by the Mogadorians. That all changed once Number Four, John, and Number Six joined forces. Their partnership eventually led to the discovery of more Loriens and in an interesting twist, Number Ten. The novel traces the journey of three of the Nine, as each of them try out their abilities, find new ones and gather together to battle the leader of the Mogadorians, Setrikus Ra.
The author knows how to write action sequences very well. The action sequences in the novel, especially the very last fight between the two forces are so intense and descriptive that I couldn’t help but imagine myself battling Setrikus Ra in vain and dodging and crushing the soldiers. Somebody once said that a good book is one in which one gets caught up in, gets into the skin of the characters; imagines oneself to be in the novel. And ‘The Rise of Nine’ manages to do just that for me.
